Hillary Clinton, SplashCast and Youth Marketing

Typically the young don’t vote.
As a guy who registered to vote on my 18th birthday, this fact has always bothered me. Actually, it pisses me off. Numerous elections would have turned out differently if more young voters actually turned off the video games and punched the card.
This election, thus far anyway, has been different. Obama has excited younger voters and they have turned out in larger numbers propelling him to his current lead.
Hillary Clinton has clearly suffered in this department.
Three Sundays ago, I received a call from a New York restaurant and was asked if SplashCast could help Hillary reach out to the youth market. In a few short days, a website featuring SplashCast technology was launched: HillarySpeaksForMe.com.
Self-serving SplashCast propaganda aside, I’ve been blown away by what has happened since.
HillarySpeaksForMe is a social media application that allows Hillary supporters to, among many other things, submit personal videos in support of Hillary. The effort has turned out to be an amazing case study for the power of SplashCast. By the numbers alone, the effort has been a huge win for Hillary.
In just two weeks the application has resulted in:
- Hundreds of thousands of applications views
- Tens of thousands of application installations and user ratings submitted on social networks such as MySpace and Facebook
- Hundreds of short videos in support of Hillary Clinton
The numbers have been amazing.
The effort has also made a major impact in other ways.
HillarySpeaksForMe has been mentioned on several major blogs such as Politico.com and Daily Koz. I got a kick seeing Wolf Blitzer mention the effort on CNN. It was also fun to see a clip of young supporters chanting “Hillary speaks for me” at a rally in Texas.
The application has served as a venue for young supporters to see that Obama doesn’t have the monopoly on the young vote. The effort has served to fire up young Hillary supporters. Watch just a few of the videos. The passion is certainly there.
I write this as I’m watching the election returns from Ohio, Texas, Vermont and Rhode Island. I’m wondering if the HillarySpeaksForMe.com effort made some difference. I’m definitely thinking that the effort should have been put in place months ago.
(As an aside, it was very interesting to watch the traffic data broken out by geography.)
I’m also thinking that the time is right for all candidates, not just Obama, to start to make full use of social media, such as SplashCast.
