I attended the NewTeeVee Live conference in San Francisco yesterday (and really enjoyed it).
The event presented a mix of big media (e.g., Hulu.com, Fox, ABC, Comcast) and quirky YouTube stars, such as Michael Buckley.
While the Buckleys of the online video world appear to be doing well from a business perspective (and having a lot of […]

Given that we are in a recession, there is a lot of talk about which sectors will be the hardest hit. The worlds of finance, real estate and automotive have been flat out slammed.
Some sectors are said to be “recession proof.” Pharmaceuticals, energy, insurance, and necessities are the obvious examples. So, what about entertainment?
Entertainment, […]

Here is the interview (of course, poolside).
Viewing Habits Online Changing (or, I think it’s time to cancel my cable)

Hulu, Joost, Tidal.tv, and others are changing the way people consume television programming (how’s that for a meaningless understatement?)
To date, most online video has been in short form. Longer form programming has remained primarily offline (at least the legal flavor). However, this is rapidly changing.
Some interesting data:
James McQuivey, a media technology analyst at Forrester Research, […]

In the midst of this insane (and insanely entertaining) election, an interesting thing just happened. The legal distribution of premium content on the web just hit a benchmark.
According to MediaPost:
Online and DVR audiences for the three Tina Fey skits on “Saturday Night Live” spoofing Sarah Palin were twice the size of the original television audience, […]

The King lives! He has recently been seen in social networks across the web.
Check out the great new Elvis micro-channel built for Sony. Music acts come and go, but Elvis is here to stay.
The first version of the Elvis micro-channel is focused on the Christmas Duets album. Elvis fans (and who isn’t) should add this […]

The late, great Roy Orbison is now on SplashCast. Check out this new micro-channel developed for Sony/BMG. There is some great interview footage, and, of course, lots of great music.
The social networks may be new school, but great old school music never goes out of style.

We just launched a great new channel for Audible.com. The channel is focused on one of my most beloved topics, politics.
The channel is a massive clearing house for some really great political content. Yesterday afternoon, I listened to a series of recent political speeches while working. Without divulging my political leanings (not that I hide […]
Media Migration Marches On

I’ve been doing some research regarding “media migration,” that is, the general movement from certain media channels (e.g., print) to others (e.g., mobile).
Of course, none of this is new. However, it’s striking when you dive into some of the data. A few data points of note:
Network television viewership has declined 40% since the early 80s
Daily […]
Find Your Inner Cable Guy

At SplashCast we have a bit of fun trying to predict how “viral” some of our channels will go. Not all viruses are created equal.
Well, I lost a little bet related to the famous Larry the Cable Guy. Larry is, well, quite viral. In fact, Larry is down right infectious.
Larry just launched. […]
